== BEGIN NOTE == The One Laptop Per Child Project (also known as OLPC) association develops a low-cost laptop—the "XO Laptop"—to revolutionize the education of world's children. The mission is "to provide educational opportunities for the world's poorest children by providing each child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power, connected laptop with content and software designed for collaborative, joyful, self-empowered learning." When children have access to this type of tool they get engaged in their own education. They learn, share, create, and collaborate. They become connected to each other, to the world and to a brighter future. It’s not a laptop project. It’s an education project. The XO is a potent learning tool designed and built especially for children in developing countries, living in some of the most remote environments. It’s about the size of a small textbook. It has built-in wireless and a unique screen that is readable under direct sunlight for children who go to school outdoors. It’s extremely durable, brilliantly functional, energy-efficient, and fun. In India, the OLPC effort begun with an effort at Khairat, a rural village near Navi Mumbai in Maharashtra during September 2007. After the successful stories of Khairat, Bangalore, Nashik, Dugawar...now it's the turn of Pune. OLPC-Pune is a group formed with volunteers, primarily students in collaboration with Digital Bridge Foundation. The aim of the group is to work on areas of : learning, technology and outreach. Currently around 35 member strong, the group can be reached via the e-mail ID olpc-india@googlegroups.com GNUnify09 was the event which got folks interested in the program together and OLPC-Pune was jumpstarted to work towards the success of the vision of the OLPC Project. As part of the task lists, the OLPC-Pune group has identified schools where the project can be implemented. Additionally, the volunteers are working on creating content and programs that are relevant to the local culture and needs. They are also involved in contributing to the localization of the User Interface of the Operating System into Marathi so as to facilitate wider adoption. The OLPC-Pune group is always on the look out for participants, volunteers and contributors. The areas to get involved include developing software applications which the children would find useful and learn about the subjects using these applications, funds to sustain the deployment and maintenance of OLPC initiatives in and around Pune. Currently, the group meets approximately every 15 days to discuss technology, work out support related issues and, have lots of fun trying out new applications on the XO hardware. == END NOTE ==
